Reception week beginning 11th September
We have had a wonderful, full and busy week in the Early Years.
In Phonics, we have started learning the sounds: s,a,t and p. In Mathematics, the children have shown their amazing skills at subitising amounts to 3 and showing the amounts on their fingers.
During our Art session, we have been learning how to use wax crayons and have explored making thin, thick, straight and curved marks onto paper. The children really enjoyed their music session where they used their voices to make a variety of sounds such as high and low.
A few reminders:
- Please could you check that your child’s uniform, drink bottles and any bags are named.
- The junk modelling station is really popular and we would be very grateful for any donations of recyclable material that you may have at home. Due to allergies, we ask that no products that contained nuts come into school.
- We are approaching that time of year where we all have lots of sniffles. Therefore, we would greatly appreciate a donation of a box of tissues.
Thank you!
Have a great weekend – The Foundation Stage Team
Welcome to Reception
We would like to say a big warm welcome to our families and children that have started their reception year this week. We hope that you all had a great summer holiday.
We have had a lovely few days getting to know one another and making new friends. The children have spent lots of time familiarising themselves with our learning environment and are now feeling much more confident in navigating their way around.
When we begin our home learning next week, this is where you will find it, attached to the end of our reception blog post.

Reception – Final Week
We have had a great last week, we listened to our favourite stories from the year, had our class treats as we filled our pom pom jars and even played some party games to celebrate!
We would like to thank you for all your kind wishes, cards and gifts that you have generously given the Foundation Stage team. We wish you a super holiday and look forward to seeing you in September.
Message for Reception:
Collins big cat online books will be available throughout the summer. Please do continue to read regularly with your child/children to continue to support their reading development.

Reception – Summer Week 12
- In maths the children have been learning how to follow a map to find hidden treasure using positional language. The children have also used a variety of blocks to create their own mazes helping to direct toy characters to find their way out. They especially enjoyed designing and drawing detailed rooms in their own make-believe houses using the story ‘If I built a house’ by Chris Van Dusen as inspiration. We had aquarium rooms, roller coaster rooms, dancing rooms and even rooms without gravity!
- During letters and sounds we have continued to consolidate all of our learning. The children have been reading words to match with pictures, practising their tricky words and writing a range of dictated sentences. We have been very impressed with their perseverance and how they are becoming more independent with their writing, well done reception!
- We want to say a big thank you for joining our summer fete on Wednesday; we hope you all had a fun time!
- On Thursday and Friday morning the children met their Year 1 teachers and got to take part in some fun activities, these included building their own marble runs which was very exciting!
We hope you have a super weekend – The Foundation Stage Team

Reception – Summer Week 11
It has been another busy week for us in reception as we near the end of our final half term! We have continued our preparation for the move to Year 1, talking to the children about all the things they are excited about as well as anything they may be feeling a little nervous about. On the whole, the general feeling is one of excitement! The children are looking forward to meeting their new teachers next week at the transition sessions and finding out more about Year 1!
- We have been exploring more complex patterns in maths this week including 3 and 4 step patterns, as well as creating our own point scoring games with beanbags and hoops and even a little counting in 2s which the children were brilliant at!
- During letters and sounds we have now covered everything for the year and are consolidating all of our learning. The children have worked so hard and we are very proud of their hard work and resilience.
We hope you have a great weekend – The Foundation Stage Team

Reception – Summer Week 10
This week we have been thinking about all the changes that will be happening at school for our children. We have talked about all the wonderful experiences we’ve had in reception this year and been looking ahead to our next term in Year 1! On the whole the children are feeling excited and are looking forward to the transition. Very soon they will get the chance to meet their new teacher, spend time in their new classroom and find out lots of exciting things all about Year 1.
- This week in maths the children have been demonstrating a deep understanding of numbers to 10 with an emphasis on the composition of each number. They have done this through the use of rekenreks, dice frames and 10 frames as well as using concrete counting objects and their fingers to support. Maths has been a real strength of our children this year, they have worked very hard and benefitted greatly from the daily maths mastery sessions.
- During letters and sounds the children have been reading and writing words ending in -ing and -ed e.g. crowded, sparked, smearing and groaning. They have also been practising reading and spelling all of the tricky words we have learnt this year.
A request:
We are very low on our recycled materials used for our junk modelling and collage station. Ideally, we would like wrapping or wall paper, small cardboard boxes, washed yoghurt pots, plastic lids, kitchen rolls (no toilet rolls please) and small plastic containers. Please can we ask that any recycled material that previously had eggs, milk or nut products inside do not come in due to allergies that we have in school. Please could the items be brought in a bag. Thank you Have a super weekend – The Foundation Stage Team

Reception – Summer Week 9
- This week in maths we are reviewing and assessing number bonds to 5. The children have been finding ways to partition (split) a set of 5 using rekenreks, their fingers and dice frames. With the help of a familiar counting song ‘5 little speckled frogs’ the children have been using what they know about 5 to work out a hidden number.
- During letters and sounds the children have been reading and writing words ending in -s and -es e.g. jumps, melts, torches and sports. They have also been practising reading and spelling the tricky words;put, pull, full, push, my, by, like, some, come, love and do.
- Sports day was a real hit! We expect that you were as proud of them as we were; what great team spirit and enthusiasm shown from all! We were also very pleased that the weather was kind to us; it was a great event for both the Nursery and the Reception classes. Thank you for coming to support us.

Reception – Summer Week 8
It has been another great week in reception, the children are now fully back into the swing of things and ready for a busy and exciting final half term of the year!
- We have continued with our ‘into space’ theme learning facts about our universe that scientists and astronauts have explored. The children were fascinated that the planet earth is constantly moving around the sun and that it takes one whole year to orbit!
- The children have been busy practising the events they will take part in for our annual sports day. They are very excited to show off their sporting prowess as they balance, jump, hurdle and sprint their way to the finish line!
- This week in maths we are reviewing and assessing number patterns with 1-10, including odds, evens, double facts and how to distribute quantities evenly. The children are once again impressing us with how much they have retained this year.

Reception – Summer Week 7
Welcome back! We hope you all had a super half term break; the children have enjoyed sharing their fun activities and family outings with us all!
- This half term, our theme is ‘Into Space’, we have been reading a range of fascinating space stories and the children have enjoyed acting out their favourite parts using our small world space station and rockets.
- Continuing our space theme, the children have been inspired to draw, build and create their own space pictures, astronaut puppets and rockets. We have attached some photos for you to enjoy.
- In our maths sessions we are continuing to review and assess our number work so far. We have been working on the following objectives: counting 1:1 from a larger group, arranging objects into groups that can be subitised, remembering to stop when they count to the end of a set of up to 10 jumps/claps/hops and sharing strategies for counting larger amounts that can’t be moved.
- During their letters and sounds the children have been reading and writing CVCC and CCVC words with long vowel sounds e.g. toast, growl, train and storm. They have also been practising reading and spelling the tricky words; says, there, when, what and one.
