Welcome Year 1

Hello year 1 families!

Class Anning and Earhart have had a busy few days getting to know their new classes and settle into the routines of year 1. We have been learning all about the amazing women who our classes are named after.

Mary Anning never gave up and showed determination to discover lots of new fossils.

Amelia Earhart never gave up and worked hard to achieve her dream of flying across the Atlantic.

This week we started both phonics and Maths. We have been busy recapping phase 3 sounds and learning how to group and sort numbers.

The team are busy assessing the children for phonics and reading so please bear with us for reading books. We are hoping to send a reading book home for your child by the end of next week.

PE days will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please ensure your child has a full kit which is to be left in school. The PE kit comprises of a white t-shirt, black shorts/skort/leggings and trainers for outside PE.

Any questions please ask Miss Prentice or Mrs Worthington.

Year 1 – Finding our five a day

In DT, we have been learning about different fruit and vegetables and how to stay healthy. We made top trumps cards about low and high sugar foods, played healthy plate bingo and lots of other games to encourage us to think about what we eat. Year 1’s favourite activity this week has been the 5 a day hunt for 12 fruit and vegetables around the classroom, corridor and playground. We are hoping to have another go outside next week!

In maths we have been consolidating all of our learning with quizzes, art challenges, tangram patterns and class activities such as estimating how long it takes us to do 20 starjumps.

Grenville Day 4

We have been getting wet in the harbour today with kayaking and raft-building and enjoyed a big roast dinner followed by Eton mess. The high ropes was a challenge for lots of the children and they did really well. Everyone gave it a go with lots of them reaching the top! Crabbing was very exciting and another lovely sunset.

It’s been another fun-filled day of activities with 5MW and the other half of 5LS joining us at lunchtime. Have a look at some action shots of the crab racing from last night, yummy food and group activities. The children have been brilliant at working together and encouraging each other to have a go!7

Year 1 – Perfect partitioning

This week, Year 1 have been using their knowledge of tens and ones in maths to represent, partition and compare 2-digit numbers with the correct symbols. We have been very impressed with their efforts and their explanations when comparing numbers.

They also had the chance to consolidate their understanding of compass directions linked to our geography topic.

In writing lessons, we have been changing the text of ‘I love bugs!’ to ‘I love pets!’ and a few of the children in 1JM took it upon themselves to make an ‘I love teachers!’ book which made us all smile! Here is some of our warm up work on labelling bugs with different adjectives:

In PSHE lessons we have talked about life cycles of animals and humans. We thought about what has changed since we were a baby and the stages that animals go through as they develop, such as a caterpillar to a butterfly.

In science, we have been labelling the parts of a plant and the children got creative making big sugar paper plant collages, connect and lego constructions in the shape of flowers and a mini garden in the roleplay area.

In RE this half-term, our big question is about how to care for others and the world around us. We read the story of the Good Samaritan and reflected on ways that we could show kindness to others in need.

Have a great weekend!
