On The Way Home

On the Way Home by Jill Murphy

This week we have been reading the story ‘On the Way Home’ that is all about a little girl called Claire who is walking home to tell her mum about how she hurt her knee. On the way home, she meets her friends and tells them how the fall happened. But just how did it happen? Was she dropped by a wolf, a slithering snake or an enormous dragon? This story has really allowed our imaginations to run wild!

The weather is starting to get better and we have enjoyed making the most of our discovery garden. Outside we have used the story to enact different scenarios, whether this is pretending an alien spaceship or a witch on a broomstick meets us on our way home. What will happen on your way home today?

Please have a look at the Home Learning that has been attached to find some fun activities that link to each area of your child’s learning. We would love to hear from you about your child’s home learning. Please could you email these to us at: fshomelearning@exwickheights.devon.sch.uk

Happy half term everyone!

A few notes:

Nursery – Suddenly!

Suddenly! A Preston Pig story has been our focus text this week, yet another fantastic story, which has helped us develop our narrative focus of ‘what happened next’. In the story written by Colin McNaughton Preston Pig is making his way home from school, little does he know that he has a hungry wolf pursuing him! At the end of each page, there is a moment where suddenly something happens and Preston luckily manages to avoid the hungry wolf.  The children found it hilarious each time the wolf has a little mishap and enjoyed predicting what would happen next each time.

We learnt the Makaton sign for ‘wolf’ this week and we revisited ‘pig’ and ‘hungry’. For our cooking activity this week we enjoyed making our own cheese straws, these were very tasty and we were so pleased to enjoy them at snack time on Wednesday.

On Friday we celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by dressing in red, white and blue, bringing in a soft toy and a delicious snack to enjoy as our high tea in the afternoon! This was a fun filled day; we talked about the Queen and the Jubilee celebrations, made bunting to decorate our classroom and enjoyed some craft activities too.

We would love to hear from you about your child’s home learning. Please could you email these to us at: fshomelearning@exwickheights.devon.sch.uk.

We hope you have a wonderful half term break and we will look forward to seeing you for our final half term of the academic year.

Nursery – The Gingerbread Man

The traditional tale of ‘The Gingerbread Man was our focus text this week, a firm favourite that most of the children were already familiar with. The children joined in with the repeated refrains in the story and they enjoyed listening to many different versions, often with different animals or characters chasing the cheeky gingerbread man!

We learnt the Makaton signs for ‘ginger’, ‘bread’ and ‘man’ this week linking to the story and we also revisited ‘cow’, ‘sheep’ and ‘pig’ when we came across the animals in different versions of the story. The children have once again been brilliant and recalling ‘what happened next’ throughout the story. We even explored different ideas for an alternative ending to the story, with suggestions such as the gingerbread man sailing a boat across the river or running until he found a bridge to cross safely (as well as many other scenarios!)

At our creative area, we have designed and cut out gingerbread men, made story masks to retell the story and used cookie cutters to make our gingerbread men. We explored flour with multi coloured gingerbread men in our sensory tray this week and for our cooking activity this week, we baked our own gingerbread men. They were so tasty and we made so many that we had them with our snack on two consecutive days!

The children have enjoyed lots of time exploring our wonderful outdoor areas this week as the weather is becoming more bright and sunny. Please ensure your child brings a sun hat and has a high factor sun cream applied before school in the morning to protect them from the sun.
