We have arrived and settled in! Despite the wet weather, the children thrown themselves, whole-heartedly, into every activity! Today, they’ve enjoyed team games including football and basketball and later tucked into a hearty meal with Chicken Katsu Curry or Vegetable Lasagne on the menu tonight!
In Maths, we are learning about fractions. Children have been finding halves, quarters and thirds of shapes and amounts. We wonder if your child can explain the difference in the fractions to you?
We have been thinking about what will happen to seeds if we plant them upside down. So that we can see the seeds germinate, we have put them in plastic wallets on the windows.
There is a special surprise to come home today which the children have been working hard on in writing. We have been using subordinate conjunctions in our writing.
One of the stories we enjoyed this week was called ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julia Donaldson. The story is about a butterfly who tries to help a little monkey find his mum. There is a lot of trial and error as the butterfly misunderstands monkey’s descriptions and leads him to all sorts of unsuitable animals.
In maths this week the children have continued to explore the composition of numbers within 10. The children compared and identified when 2 sets were equal or NOT equal. They saw a range of familiar representations including dice and fingers to explore the idea of ‘2 equal parts’, and then found the whole by combining these parts.
For letters and sounds the children have revisited the phase 3 sounds and the tricky words- no, of, to, into, she, he and we. Please refer to the phonics guidance in our home learning where you can access helpful videos to help your child practise at home. We have been ‘chunking’ up longer words e.g. ‘fan/tas/tic’ and ‘hel/met’ as well as reading words ending in ‘er’ e.g. ‘farmer’ and ‘shorter’.
The children have also enjoyed drawing detailed pictures and writing cards to celebrate their mum or a special person they are thankful for and who look after them.
A request:
We are collecting recycled materials for our junk modelling station. Ideally, we would like small boxes, washed yoghurt pots, kitchen rolls (no toilet rolls please) and small containers. Please can we ask that any recycled material that previously had nut products inside do not come in due to allergies that we have in school. Please could the items be brought in a bag. Thank you
Our RE learning this half term is focused around the enquiry question, ‘Why is the Torah so special to the Jewish community?’ To add some real-life experience to our learning, we visited Exeter Synagogue this week. We came away with countless facts about Judaism, the history of the Synagogue and the beliefs and traditions of Jews in Exeter and around the world. We’re sure the children had lots to share at home! Take a look at the pictures below:
In English, we have been writing biographies this week about inspirational women using our class text: ‘HERstory’ which looks at famous woman in History.
Children have chosen to research and write about Emma Watson, Lucy Bronze, Marie Curie, Rosa Parks and many, many more!
To celebrate World Book Day, our children arrived dressed to impress and enjoyed sharing their favourite books and characters.
They kept teachers on their toes by making us guess the character they had chosen and completed some fun book related activities such as a quiz, guess the author, wordsearches and book reviews. Some classes also enjoyed travelling across to Reception and Year 1 to share their book preferences and read to them. The younger children were mesmerised by the older children reading to them with expression. Enjoy a few photographs ……..
This week’s home learning has been phenomenal in Year 5. As part of National Careers Week, all children were given a unique task that would help them reach their individual career goal in the future. We had a raft of excellent videos, presentations, displays, stories, fact-files, teaching episodes, stop-motion animations, sporting demonstrations and even more wonderful creations. The teachers have been extremely impressed with the effort and time that has been given to create these pieces of home learning – there is no doubt that this determination will see our children reach their dreams! We look forward to receiving even more terrific home learning (focused on Neurodiversity Celebration Week) next Thursday.
Next week, we have our trip to the synagogue, as part of our Judaism topic. On Tuesday, 5GT and half of 5MW will visit; on Wednesday, 5LS and the other half of 5MW will have their turn. Please check the MCAS app for further information and filling out permission forms. If you have any questions, please email the school office or the Y5 home learning email.
This week the children have visited the Mosque as part of their work on the Muslim faith in RE. The children were fantastic on the coach and listened well in the Prayer Hall. They learned about how many Muslims attend Friday prayer in the Mosque in Exeter, how Muslims wash before prayer and saw the Mihrab which shows the direction of Mecca. We also saw the dome and found out that before technology, that the dome helped the sound carry inside the Mosque. Many Mosques like Exeter, still have domes as they are traditional. The children also got the opportunity to sketch patterns and objects inside the Prayer Hall.
We have loved the excitement today of World Book Day. The outfits have been amazing and we will post pictures of this next week. We started the day with a parade of all the outfits in Year 2. The children have also done a selection of book activities. Your child will bring home a World Book Day voucher today which can be used to get a ‘free’ book (see https://www.worldbookday.com/books) or can be used to get a £1 off a full price book. Enjoy spending them!
