Nursery – This is the Bear

This week we have been reading ‘This is the Bear’ by Sarah Hayes. In the story, a boy’s teddy bear is put in the bin by his dog! The bear is then taken away with the refuse collector all the way to the dump! The boy catches the bus to the dump to find his bear, eventually his dog ‘smells a smell’, and they are reunited with the bear.

We have enjoyed a few other from the same collection of stories including ‘This is the Bear and the Bad Little Girl’, ‘This is the Bear and the Scary Night’ and ‘This is the Bear and the Picnic Lunch’. They have all been very popular with the children.

Our Makaton signs of the week have been ‘bear’ and ‘dog’. The children have been super at remembering them; perhaps they could show you at home?

We have been continuing our narrative theme of where this week. In the story, the bear asked if they could go on another day out. We talked about the rubbish dump not being much of a day out and the children came up with some much better ideas, including the funfair, the park and the cinema to name a few.

We have been talking about our emotions this week, we decided that the bear would be sad if he fell in the bin and the boy was happy when he had found his bear. We had a go at using our drawing skills to draw an emotion, starting with a happy face; we talked about all the things that make us feel happy too.

Linking to our text, we had made a paper plate bear using collage this week. Our bears looked brilliant and we worked hard to complete them! Please have a look at the attached Home Learning to find some fun activities that link to each area of your child’s learning. We would love to hear from you about your child’s home learning. Please could you email these to us at: fshomelearning@exwickheights.devon.sch.uk.

Notes: We would love to receive any recyclable material for our junk modelling station. These can include cardboard boxes, cleaned out yoghurt pots or plastic containers. Please can we ask that anything that contained nuts does not come in due to allergies.
